This book is part memoir, part confession, and part cultural analysis that spans nearly two decades of my life, which took me from a high-level university position to becoming a police officer, to someone who was ground to dust in mind, body, and spirit and living out of a friend's spare bedroom during a dark and treacherous period of my life. Everything imploded, and I suddenly found myself completely broke, alone, and with absolutely nothing. I take the reader on a brutally honest, if not blunt, walkthrough of this dark night of my soul, using personal experiences, vignettes, and real (cop!) stories to engage the reader and take them on a journey that saw me go from a "Cradle Catholic," to becoming an obnoxiously agnostic asshole (at best) during my politically militant days, before finally fighting my way back into deep spirituality and back into faith. But, this is not just another inspirational self-help book filled with positivity, oh no...
While taking the reader on a journey through my transition from a career in academia to law enforcement, and the subsequent dark period I traversed, I do so within the context of the social and ideological undertones currently flowing freely and strongly across the U.S. and within other western cultures. And while not the focus of the book, it is certainly timely, and so I take the opportunity to address the proliferation of critical theory and its most prominent offshoots, such as critical race theory and postmodernism, in efforts of educating more regarding their origins. Additionally, I voice my concerns over some of the more radical and psychologically damaging precepts associated with all Neo-Marxist ideologies, which have somehow made their way from universities and colleges of education, into the wider public discourse, and even public and educational policies.
No doubt I cover many dark topics and a great deal of dark content so, to lighten the emotional load, I approach the subject matter in a humorous, snarky, and self-deprecating manner, to be entertaining and funny (hopefully), as well as educational. Most importantly, however, it isn’t written for the academics or elitist weenies of the world. Rather, it's written for the average person using down-to-earth language that is easy to understand (I think). Of course, given the subject matter, it's inevitable that I use some jargon, especially when discussing the philosophical and theoretical concepts I introduce. Not to worry, I bring all those unfamiliar terms down to earth and explain them in a way that is easy to understand and, more importantly, that will empower you when in the trenches of the cultural and spiritual battles currently raging in the public sphere.
My ultimate goals, however, are to entertain, educate, provide insight, and perhaps even make you laugh amidst the darkness and chaos.
